There are common ways to find jobs in Kenya that people recommend to new entrants into the Kenyan jobs market. Logically thinking, if there are 2million new entrants into the jobs market in Kenya, then it follows that there are an additional 2million new entrants into your commonly recommended strategy. Right?
I believe that using a common route to find a scarce commodity is not clever. Simply said, if you are working your job search along commonly used search methods, then that is not clever.
a There is an easy way to get the best job offer available to you.
One of the most common answers you hear from job-seekers in response to what kind of job they seek is ‘anything’.
It’s easy in a country where we have all been led to believe that ‘there are no jobs’ is a statement of fact, to understand what the spirit of that answer is.
It simply comes from the place of belief where you assume you do not have too many choices.
It's a little like going to your grandmother’s home; if you have one like my late grandma (God bless her very lovely soul), then the only beverage she can offer is tea. Tea with a drop of milk and boiled over a kuni fire – it would come with a wonderful aroma of kuni. I think it is what the west would call ‘flavour’. I miss that tea. You can’t get ‘kuni’ flavoured tea in town.
So if grandma asked ‘what can I offer you’ – knowing your only choice anyway was ‘kuni’ flavoured tea, you would graciously say, ‘anything’.
Now, that serves you at grandma’s, but works terribly for you when you are looking for a job.
First, that answer lends itself to undirected thought in the mind of the listener. If you have any idea how life works, undirected thought can never give you clear results.
Here is how it works.
Picture yourself as an employer for a minute. Maybe you want to picture yourself as one who has employed a house-help. When the house-help came to the job, you made your instructions clear. They were to wash the house, dishes, and clothes.
They were not to cook, nor wash the car, and most important, they were not there to clear the garden. Why? You have another employee whose assignment, also clearly given to them is to cook, wash the car and tend the garden.
Now picture that the house help who was to wash the house, dishes and clothes has left and you are now looking for another one. Not too hard a thing to imagine; house-helps leave all the time.
Picture that you have two people whom you are interviewing. One comes in and tells you they can do 'anything'.
The other tells you they can clean dishes and wash the house because they did those two assignments at their last employment where they worked for three years. They can wash clothes because they have run a volunteer service washing clothes for new mothers in their neighbourhood for years.
Think about those two potential employees very carefully – who will you employ faster?
One is clear about their personal employment worth and the other appears not to be too sure what they can do and so to be safe they said 'anything'.
Its a common error of people seeking jobs in Kenya. You too must know exactly how to sell yourself before potential employers to get a job in Kenya with ease. That clarity is gotten from having a clear personal job search strategy.
You can now get that personal job plan in one place through the Paula Thayrow jobs ebook series. To read more on how an ebook can aid your personal and speedy access to a job, click here.
